Rytr is a low-cost AI writing assistant built for short and medium-length content: emails, product descriptions, social posts, ad copy, blog outlines and quick rewrites. It has a permanent free plan, an Unlimited plan that costs less than a lunch each month, and a Chrome extension that brings it into Gmail, WordPress, LinkedIn and most other text boxes you write in.

It won't replace a frontier chatbot for research or 3,000-word deep dives. If what you need is a fast, cheap tool for the many small pieces of writing that come with running a product or a business, it's one of the best value options available. You can try Rytr free here (opens in a new tab) with no credit card.

How Rytr works

Rytr is organized around use cases. Instead of typing an open-ended prompt into a blank chat box, you pick what you're writing (say "Product Description" or "Email"), choose a language and a tone, fill in a couple of short fields, and Rytr generates a few variants to choose from.

That structure is the whole point. You don't need to know how to prompt well, because each use case is already a well-tuned prompt behind the scenes. You describe your product in one or two sentences, and Rytr handles the format.

Everything lands in a document editor, where you can keep working:

  • Select any text and ask Rytr to rephrase it, shorten it, expand it, improve it or continue writing from that point.
  • Give a direct command (for example "rewrite this more formally" or "turn this into three bullet points") and Rytr applies it to the selection.
  • Run a plagiarism check on paid plans before you publish.

Key features

40+ use cases

Rytr's templates cover most everyday business writing: blog ideas and outlines, blog sections, emails, cold outreach, product descriptions, Facebook and Google ad copy, SEO meta titles and descriptions, social captions, profile bios, job descriptions, interview questions, testimonial replies, video descriptions, calls to action, landing page copy and more. There are also utility tools like a paragraph generator, grammar checker, sentence shortener and text inflator.

On the Premium plan you can create custom use cases for things you write repeatedly, such as release notes or a weekly customer newsletter, so you don't have to fill in the same instructions every time.

Tones and Tone Match

Rytr ships with 20+ preset tones (convincing, casual, formal, enthusiastic, humorous, empathetic and so on). The more interesting feature is Tone Match: you paste in a sample of your own writing, Rytr analyzes it, and future generations mirror your voice. Unlimited includes one custom tone; Premium lets you create several (useful if you write for multiple brands or clients).

Chrome extension

The extension lets you call Rytr from inside any text field in the browser: highlight text in Gmail, a Google Doc, WordPress, LinkedIn or a support inbox and rewrite, expand or continue it without switching tabs. It's included on both paid plans, and for many people it ends up being the main way they use Rytr.

Plagiarism checker

Paid plans include monthly plagiarism checks (50 on Unlimited, 100 on Premium), so you can confirm a piece doesn't closely match existing content before you publish it.

Languages

Rytr supports 35+ languages on Premium, which makes it handy for localized product descriptions or replying to international customers. The free and Unlimited plans are limited to one language.

Free$0$010K characters/month, 1 language, all core use cases
Unlimited$9/mo$7.50/mo ($90/yr)Unlimited generations, 1 Tone Match, 50 plagiarism checks/mo, Chrome extension, 2x input limit
Premium$29/mo$24.16/mo ($290/yr)Everything in Unlimited plus multiple Tone Matches, 35+ languages, 100 plagiarism checks/mo, custom use cases, 3x input limit, priority support

Annual billing works out to two months free. Prices are from Rytr's pricing page (opens in a new tab) at the time of writing; check before you subscribe, as they can change.

Which plan should you pick?

  • Free is enough to learn the tool and to write the occasional email or bio. 10,000 characters is roughly 1,500 to 2,000 words a month.
  • Unlimited is the sweet spot for most freelancers, solo founders and small businesses. At $7.50 a month you stop counting characters and get the Chrome extension.
  • Premium is worth it if you write in more than one language, manage several brand voices, or want custom use cases for repeat content.

What Rytr does well

  • Price. Unlimited generations for under $10 a month is hard to beat. Most dedicated AI writing tools cost two to five times more.
  • Speed for short-form copy. For a product description, a cold email or five ad headlines, Rytr is faster than prompting a general chatbot because the format is already set up.
  • Low learning curve. Pick a use case, fill in two fields, done. It's a good fit for teammates who don't want to learn prompting.
  • Works where you write. The Chrome extension means less copying and pasting between tabs.
  • Your voice, not a generic one. Tone Match helps cut down the "sounds like AI" problem once you give it a good sample of your writing.

Where Rytr falls short

  • Long-form quality. Rytr can draft a whole blog post, but it gets repetitive after several paragraphs. It works best when you build long pieces section by section from an outline (we show how in our Rytr blog-writing workflow).
  • Facts. Like every AI writer, Rytr can state things confidently that aren't true. It doesn't browse the web or cite sources, so verify statistics, prices and claims yourself.
  • Not a research assistant. For analyzing documents, coding or multi-step reasoning, a general assistant like Claude or ChatGPT is the better tool. Rytr is a writing tool, not a thinking partner.
  • Language limits on cheaper plans. Multilingual writing requires Premium.

Who should use Rytr

Rytr is a strong fit if you are:

  • A solo founder or indie hacker who needs a landing page, launch posts, app store copy and onboarding emails, and would rather spend time building. See how to use Rytr to launch your app.
  • A small business or ecommerce owner writing product descriptions, ads, and customer replies every week. See our guide to writing marketing copy with Rytr.
  • A blogger or content marketer who wants help with outlines, intros and section drafts, while keeping the final edit human.
  • A freelancer juggling several clients' brand voices (Premium's multiple Tone Matches help here).

It's probably not for you if you mostly need deep research, technical documentation for complex systems, or you already pay for a general AI assistant and are comfortable writing detailed prompts.

Getting started in five minutes

  1. Create a free Rytr account (opens in a new tab) (no card needed).
  2. Open a new document, set the language and tone, and pick a use case like "Email" or "Product Description".
  3. Fill in the short input fields with specific details: who it's for, what makes it different, and what you want the reader to do.
  4. Generate two or three variants, keep the best lines from each, and edit.
  5. Once it's earning its place in your week, upgrade to Unlimited and install the Chrome extension.

The verdict

Rytr does one job and charges very little for it: turning a few specific details into usable short-form copy, fast, in a voice that can sound like you. Treat it as a fast first-draft machine rather than an autopilot, edit what it gives you, and it will save hours every month for the cost of a coffee.

Start with Rytr's free plan (opens in a new tab) and upgrade only if you hit the character limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rytr free?

Yes. Rytr's free plan includes 10,000 characters a month with no credit card required. Paid plans start at $7.50 a month (billed annually) for unlimited generations.

Is Rytr's Unlimited plan really unlimited?

Rytr advertises unlimited AI generations on the Unlimited and Premium plans. The plans differ in input length limits, the number of custom tones, plagiarism checks and languages rather than in how much you can generate.

Is Rytr good for SEO blog posts?

Rytr is good for SEO building blocks: topic ideas, outlines, section drafts, meta titles and descriptions. For full articles, write section by section and add your own experience, examples and facts. Search engines reward helpful, original content, not raw AI output.

Can Google detect Rytr content?

Google's stated position is that it ranks helpful content regardless of how it's produced, and penalizes content made mainly to manipulate rankings. Heavily edited Rytr drafts with real expertise added are fine; publishing unedited AI text at scale is not.

Rytr vs ChatGPT or Claude: which should I use?

General assistants are more capable and flexible, especially for research, reasoning and long documents. Rytr is cheaper, faster for routine copy thanks to its templates, works inside any text box via its extension, and doesn't require prompting skills. Many people use both: a general assistant for thinking, Rytr for everyday copy.

Does Rytr have a Chrome extension?

Yes. The Rytr Chrome extension is included on the Unlimited and Premium plans and works in most web text fields, including Gmail, Google Docs, WordPress and social platforms.
