ElevenLabs is the leading AI voice platform: it turns text into speech that is very hard to tell apart from a human recording, clones voices from short samples, dubs video into dozens of languages, and powers real-time voice agents. It has a free plan, paid plans from $6 a month, and in September 2026 it launched Eleven v4, its most expressive voice model so far.

If you make videos, podcasts, audiobooks, courses or apps that talk, ElevenLabs is the tool to beat. You can try ElevenLabs free here (opens in a new tab) without a credit card.

What ElevenLabs does

ElevenLabs started as a text-to-speech tool and has grown into three product areas:

  • ElevenCreative, the web app for creators and marketing teams: text to speech, voice cloning and voice design, Studio for long-form projects, dubbing, sound effects, music, and newer image and video tools.
  • ElevenAgents, for building conversational voice agents that answer phones, sit on your website or chat over WhatsApp.
  • ElevenAPI, the developer platform behind both, for adding voice to your own apps.

Text to speech

Paste a script, pick a voice and a model, and generate. The output handles pacing, emphasis and emotion far better than older TTS engines. With the expressive models you can steer delivery with simple audio tags in the text, such as whispering, laughing or sounding excited, instead of fiddling with sliders.

Voice models

ElevenLabs offers several models, each tuned for a different job:

ModelUse it for
Eleven v4The most expressive, emotive narration and character voices
Eleven v4 TurboReal-time voice agents, roughly 150ms to first speech
Eleven MultilingualConsistent, lifelike long-form speech across languages
Eleven FlashLowest latency (around 75ms) for conversational use

Eleven v4 launched on September 28, 2026, and topped independent blind listening leaderboards at launch. ElevenLabs says it supports 90+ languages and can clone a voice from about 10 seconds of audio.

Voice cloning and voice design

  • Instant Voice Cloning (Starter and up) creates a usable copy of a voice from a short sample.
  • Professional Voice Cloning (Creator and up) trains on longer, cleaner recordings for a near-indistinguishable result, and requires verifying that the voice is yours.
  • Voice Design creates a brand-new synthetic voice from a text description ("warm, middle-aged British narrator, calm and authoritative").

Dubbing

Upload a video and ElevenLabs translates and re-voices it into 70+ languages while keeping each speaker's voice, tone and timing. Dubbing v2 (May 2026) improved timing and speaker separation.

Speech to text, sound effects and music

Scribe transcribes audio with high accuracy, the sound effects generator creates SFX from a text prompt, and the music generator produces original tracks you can use commercially on paid plans.

Voice agents

ElevenAgents lets you build a voice assistant that listens, thinks with the LLM of your choice, and talks back, then deploy it to a phone number, your website (one line of HTML), WhatsApp and more. We cover it in our guide to building an AI voice agent with ElevenLabs.

ElevenLabs pricing (October 2026)

Every plan gives you a monthly allowance of credits. For text to speech, credits roughly track characters of text, so 10,000 credits is about 10 minutes of audio on the standard models.

ElevenLabs often runs a first-month discount on Creator (recently 50% off, so $11). Prices are from the ElevenLabs pricing page (opens in a new tab) at the time of writing and do change.

Which plan should you choose?

  • Free: test voices and models. The big catch is no commercial license, so don't publish monetized content made on Free.
  • Starter ($6): the cheapest way to use voices commercially and clone your own voice instantly. Good for occasional videos or short social clips.
  • Creator ($22): the sweet spot for YouTubers, podcasters and course creators. Two hours of audio a month, Professional Voice Cloning and higher audio quality.
  • Pro ($99): for audiobooks, high-volume channels and apps using the API in production.
  • Scale and Business: for teams and companies that need seats and big volumes.

What ElevenLabs does well

  • Voice quality. It is still the benchmark other voice tools are compared against.
  • Emotion and control. Audio tags and the v4 model make it possible to direct a performance, not just read text.
  • Breadth. Narration, cloning, dubbing, transcription, SFX, music and agents in one account with one license.
  • Languages. Natural-sounding speech and dubbing across 70+ languages.
  • Developer-friendly. A clean API and SDKs make it easy to add voice to an app; see how to add ElevenLabs voice to your app.

Where ElevenLabs falls short

  • Credits run out quickly at volume. Long audiobooks or high-traffic apps get expensive; plan your usage before you commit.
  • You still need to listen to everything. Names, acronyms, numbers and unusual words are occasionally mispronounced. Budget time to review and regenerate.
  • The free plan isn't for publishing. No commercial license until you pay.
  • Voice cloning brings responsibility. Only clone voices you own or have explicit, written permission to use. ElevenLabs has safeguards, but the legal and ethical risk is yours.
  • Lots of products, lots of menus. The platform has grown fast and can feel busy for beginners.

Who should use ElevenLabs

  • YouTubers, course creators and podcasters who want professional narration without recording every take. See our ElevenLabs voiceover guide.
  • Authors and publishers producing audiobooks.
  • Businesses going international that need videos dubbed into other languages.
  • Founders and developers adding voice features or phone agents to their product.

Getting started

  1. Create a free ElevenLabs account (opens in a new tab).
  2. Open Text to Speech, paste a paragraph of your script, and audition a few voices from the library.
  3. Try the same text on Eleven v4 and Multilingual to hear the difference.
  4. When you're ready to publish, upgrade to Starter or Creator for the commercial license, and clone your own voice so your content sounds like you.

The verdict

ElevenLabs is the best AI voice platform you can buy in 2026, and Eleven v4 widened the gap. It isn't the cheapest at high volume, and you still need a human ear on the output, but for most creators the Creator plan pays for itself the first time it saves you a recording session.

Frequently asked questions

Is ElevenLabs free?

Yes. The free plan includes 10,000 credits a month, roughly 10 minutes of speech, but it does not include a commercial license. Paid plans start at $6 a month.

Can I use ElevenLabs voices commercially?

Yes, on any paid plan from Starter upwards. Content made on the free plan can't be used commercially.

What is Eleven v4?

Eleven v4 is ElevenLabs' newest and most expressive text-to-speech model, released September 28, 2026, alongside Eleven v4 Turbo for low-latency voice agents.

Cloning your own voice, or a voice you have explicit permission to use, is fine. Cloning someone else's voice without consent can violate ElevenLabs' terms and, in many places, the law. Professional Voice Cloning requires you to verify the voice is yours.

How many minutes do I get per plan?

Roughly 10 minutes on Free, 30 on Starter, 2 hours on Creator, 10 hours on Pro, 30 hours on Scale and 100 hours on Business, based on standard text-to-speech usage.

Does ElevenLabs work in other languages?

Yes. ElevenLabs supports 70+ languages across its platform, and the Eleven v4 model supports 90+.
