To get a voiceover from ElevenLabs that sounds human, write the script for the ear, pick the right voice and model, direct the delivery with audio tags, and generate in short sections you can redo individually. Do that, and most listeners won't realize the narration is AI.

This guide walks through the whole process for YouTube videos, podcasts, online courses and audiobooks, including cloning your own voice and dubbing into other languages. New to the platform? Step 1: Write the script for listening, not reading

The biggest quality jump doesn't come from the voice. It comes from the script. Text written to be read silently often sounds stiff when spoken. Before you paste anything into ElevenLabs:

  • Use short sentences. One idea per sentence. Long, comma-heavy sentences make any voice sound robotic.
  • Write how you talk. Contractions ("you'll", "it's"), direct address ("you") and the occasional fragment. Like this.
  • Spell out tricky things. Write "twenty twenty-six" or "2026" consistently, expand acronyms the first time, and spell unusual names phonetically if they get mispronounced.
  • Use punctuation as direction. A full stop is a pause. An ellipsis is a longer pause... A dash creates a quick break — like this. A question mark lifts the intonation.
  • Use paragraph breaks where you'd naturally take a breath.

If an AI tool helps you draft the script, give it these rules up front. Our Rytr blog-writing workflow shows a section-by-section drafting approach that works just as well for video scripts.

Step 2: Choose the voice

Open Text to Speech and browse the voice library. There are thousands of voices, so filter by language, accent, age, gender and use case (narration, conversational, characters, news and so on).

Audition voices with a paragraph from your actual script, not the sample text. A voice that sounds great on a demo sentence can be wrong for your content. Ask:

  • Does the energy match the content? Tutorials suit calm and clear; entertainment can be bolder.
  • Will listeners be comfortable with it for 10 minutes, not just 10 seconds?
  • Does it handle your vocabulary (product names, technical terms)?

Save your favorites so you can use the same voice across every video. Consistency is part of your brand.

Step 3: Pick the right model

You're making...Use
Narration with emotion, characters, storytellingEleven v4
Long, consistent narration (courses, audiobooks), multilingualEleven Multilingual
Quick drafts, real-time or high-volume workEleven Flash or v4 Turbo

Eleven v4, released in late September 2026, is ElevenLabs' most expressive model and the one to start with for most creator content. Try the same paragraph on two models and trust your ears.

Step 4: Direct the performance

With the expressive models you can direct delivery inside the text using audio tags in square brackets, for example:

[excited] We just hit one hundred thousand subscribers!
[whispers] And I have a secret to tell you.
[sighs] But first, the bad news.

Tags work best sparingly: one at the start of a line that needs a change in tone, not on every sentence. Generate, listen, and adjust. If a line still sounds wrong, rephrasing the sentence often helps more than adding tags.

You can also adjust the voice settings. Lower stability gives more variation and emotion (and occasional surprises); higher stability gives a steadier, more predictable read. For narration, a middle setting is a good default.

Step 5: Generate in sections and fix the weak spots

Don't generate a 10-minute script in one go. Work a paragraph or scene at a time:

  1. Generate a section.
  2. Listen all the way through with headphones.
  3. Regenerate any line with a mispronunciation, odd emphasis or strange pacing.
  4. Download and move on.

Common fixes:

  • Mispronounced word: spell it phonetically ("Kubernetes" → "koo-ber-net-eez") or rephrase.
  • Rushed delivery: split long sentences, add a full stop or paragraph break.
  • Flat delivery: add an audio tag or try a more expressive voice or model.
  • Inconsistent tone between sections: keep the same voice, model and settings for the whole project.

Step 6: Use Studio for long-form projects

For anything long (a course module, a podcast episode, an audiobook chapter), use Studio in ElevenCreative instead of the basic text-to-speech box. Studio lets you:

  • Import a full script or manuscript and split it into chapters and paragraphs.
  • Assign different voices to different speakers or characters.
  • Regenerate individual paragraphs without redoing the chapter.
  • Add sound effects and music, then mix and export the finished audio.

For audiobooks, check the requirements of the platform you're publishing to, including any rules on disclosing AI narration.

Step 7: Clone your own voice (optional, but powerful)

If you're the face of your channel or course, a clone of your own voice keeps everything sounding like you, even when you don't have time to record.

  • Instant Voice Cloning (Starter plan and up) works from a short sample and is good enough for many uses.
  • Professional Voice Cloning (Creator plan and up) trains on longer recordings and sounds noticeably closer to you. ElevenLabs asks you to verify that the voice is yours.

Tips for a good clone:

  • Record in a quiet, non-echoey room with a decent microphone.
  • Speak naturally, in the same style you want the clone to use (don't read in a monotone if you want lively narration).
  • Avoid background music, noise and long silences.
  • Provide more clean audio rather than less for Professional cloning.

Only clone voices you own or have clear, written permission to use. Cloning someone else's voice without consent breaks ElevenLabs' terms and can be illegal.

Step 8: Reach new audiences with dubbing

Once a video works in English, ElevenLabs Dubbing can translate and re-voice it into 70+ languages while keeping each speaker's voice and timing. For YouTube, that means a Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi or German audio track for the same video.

Have a native speaker spot-check the first few dubs in each language before scaling up. Translations can be technically correct but tonally off.

Disclose AI voices where it matters

Many platforms, including YouTube, ask creators to label realistic synthetic or altered content. Audiobook stores and podcast directories have their own policies. Being upfront with your audience also builds trust: a short "narrated with an AI version of my voice" note costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can people tell an ElevenLabs voiceover is AI?

With a well-written script, the right voice and a careful listen-through, most listeners can't. Unedited scripts with long sentences and unusual words are what usually give it away.

Can I monetize YouTube videos with ElevenLabs voices?

Yes, on a paid plan (Starter or above), which includes a commercial license. Follow YouTube's policies on disclosing realistic synthetic content.

What's the best ElevenLabs model for narration?

Eleven v4 for expressive, emotional narration; Eleven Multilingual for long, consistent narration, especially in multiple languages.

How do I fix a word ElevenLabs keeps mispronouncing?

Spell it phonetically in the script, rephrase the sentence, or regenerate. For brand names you use often, keep a list of phonetic spellings that work.
