Checking one article at a time doesn't scale once you run a content site, an agency, or a team of freelance writers. Originality.ai's site scan audits an entire website in one go, team features keep every writer's scans and reports organized, and the API lets you build checks straight into your own publishing workflow. This guide shows how to use each, with practical playbooks for site owners, agencies and people buying websites.

For the basics of what Originality.ai checks and what it costs, read our Originality.ai review. To follow along, set up an Originality.ai account (opens in a new tab); site scans and teams are part of the Pro plan.

Playbook 1: Audit your own website

Most established sites have content nobody has looked at in years: old freelance posts, AI-drafted pages from a busy month, articles copied by a long-gone contractor. An audit tells you what you actually have.

  1. Run a site scan on your domain. Originality.ai crawls your pages and runs the checks you choose across them.
  2. Sort the results by AI score and plagiarism matches.
  3. Triage each flagged page:
    • Plagiarized: rewrite or remove first. This is the real risk.
    • High AI score and low traffic: improve it (add experience, examples, updated facts) or consolidate it into a better page.
    • High AI score but genuinely helpful and ranking: leave it, but update facts and add original material over time.
    • Thin and unhelpful, however it was made: merge, improve or delete.
  4. Re-scan after fixes and save the reports.

Remember AI scores are probabilities and false positives happen; our guide to reading AI scores fairly explains the caveats. The aim is better content, not a perfect score.

Credit estimate: one credit covers 100 words per check. A 200-page site averaging 1,200 words is about 2,400 credits per check type, so plan the scan (or scan your most important sections first) with your plan's monthly credits in mind.

Playbook 2: Vet a website before you buy it

If you're buying a content site, its value depends on traffic that could disappear if the content is plagiarized or mass-produced. Before you sign:

  • Scan the whole site, or at least the pages that drive most traffic and revenue.
  • Look for patterns: a sudden jump in AI-scored content from a particular date often marks when the previous owner started mass-producing articles.
  • Check plagiarism carefully. Copied content is a legal and ranking liability you'd be inheriting.
  • Use the reports in negotiation, and factor in the cost of rewriting anything you'd need to fix.

Playbook 3: Manage freelance writers

For agencies and publishers working with several writers:

  1. Add your editors to a team in Originality.ai (extra seats cost extra on Pro and Enterprise).
  2. Tag scans by writer and client so you can see each writer's history at a glance.
  3. Scan every delivery for plagiarism, facts and AI use before approving or paying.
  4. Send shareable reports when revisions are needed. Writers see exactly what was flagged, which makes feedback specific rather than personal.
  5. Publish a clear AI policy for writers, and use the AI allowance setting so scans reflect it.
  6. Encourage writers to work in Google Docs so Writing Replay is available if a piece is ever disputed.

Our pre-publish checklist is a good template for the per-article review.

Many agencies also send clients the reports as proof of quality control, which is an easy way to stand out from cheaper competitors.

Playbook 4: Automate checks with the API

If you publish a lot, or you've built your own CMS or content tool, the Originality.ai API (Enterprise plan) lets you run scans automatically instead of pasting text into the dashboard. Common setups:

  • Scan on submit: when a writer submits a draft in your CMS, run AI and plagiarism checks and show the results to the editor.
  • Block publishing on plagiarism: require a passing plagiarism check before a post can go live.
  • Nightly audits: re-scan recently updated pages and send a summary to Slack or email.
  • Client dashboards: show each client the checks run on their content.

If you're vibe coding these tools with an AI agent, point it at the current Originality.ai API documentation (opens in a new tab) rather than relying on its memory, since endpoints and versions change. A starting prompt:

Read the current Originality.ai API docs at https://docs.originality.ai/ and add a
content check to our CMS.
- When an editor clicks "Run checks" on a draft, call the AI detection and plagiarism
endpoints from a server-side route. Read the API key from ORIGINALITY_API_KEY and
never expose it to the browser.
- Store the results (scores, flagged passages, plagiarism matches with URLs) on the draft.
- Show them in the editor sidebar, with a link to the full report.
- Disable the Publish button if plagiarism matches exceed our threshold.
- Rate limit the route and log credit usage per check.
Show me a plan first, then implement it.

Then review what it builds: confirm the key is only used on the server, test with a known-plagiarized paragraph, and keep an eye on credit usage. Our guides to Next.js API routes and the vibe coding security checklist cover the patterns to look for.

Frequently asked questions

Can Originality.ai scan an entire website?

Yes. The site scan feature, included with Pro and Enterprise, crawls a site and runs checks across its pages.

How many credits does a site scan use?

One credit per 100 words per check type. Estimate by multiplying the number of pages by their average length, and scan priority sections first if your credits are limited.

Does Originality.ai have an API?

Yes. API access is included on the Enterprise plan for automating checks in your own tools and CMS.

Can I share scan results with writers or clients?

Yes. Paid plans include shareable and downloadable reports, so you can send exactly what was flagged.

Get your house in order

Start with the content that matters most: your top 20 pages by traffic, or the last month of freelance deliveries. Run them through Originality.ai (opens in a new tab), fix what it finds, and build checks into your process so you don't have to audit the same problems again.
