Originality.ai is a content quality checker built for publishers, SEO teams, agencies and educators. In one scan it estimates whether text was written by AI, checks for plagiarism, flags factual claims that may be wrong, and scores readability and grammar. There's a free daily AI check, pay-as-you-go credits, and a Pro plan from $12.95 a month.

If you publish content written by freelancers, AI tools, or a mix of both, it answers the question every editor now has: what exactly am I about to publish? You can try Originality.ai here (opens in a new tab).

What Originality.ai does

AI checker

Paste text, upload a document, or scan a URL, and Originality.ai predicts whether it was written by a person or generated by AI. It's trained to recognize output from the major model families (OpenAI's GPT models, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, DeepSeek, Llama and others) and is updated as new models launch. It also detects AI-paraphrased text, such as content run through tools like QuillBot to disguise it.

The result is shown as a confidence score, not a percentage of AI text. "Likely Original, 85% confidence" means the model is 85% confident the text is human-written. It does not mean 15% of the text is AI. Highlighting shows which passages drove the prediction. We explain how to read scores properly, and what to do about false positives, in our guide to Originality.ai accuracy and false positives.

AI allowance

Many publishers now accept AI-assisted writing, within limits. Originality.ai lets you set how much AI you allow, so a scan can reflect your actual policy rather than a pass/fail on any AI use.

Plagiarism checker

Checks your text against the web for copied or closely matching passages, with links to the sources. Essential when you hire writers or publish content drafted with AI, which can occasionally reproduce existing text.

Fact checker

Flags factual claims and gives an assessment of whether each looks accurate, with sources to review. AI writing tools sometimes "hallucinate" convincing but wrong facts, so this is a useful second line of defense, although a human still needs to verify anything important.

Readability, grammar and content quality

Readability scores, grammar and spelling suggestions, a content quality score and a guideline checker help editors bring drafts up to standard before they go live.

Site scan and bulk scan

Scan an entire website, or many documents at once, to audit existing content. Useful before buying a website, when taking over a client's blog, or when checking what a past writer actually delivered. See our guide to auditing a site and your writers with Originality.ai.

Chrome extension and Writing Replay

The Chrome extension scans text from any page and, in Google Docs, can replay how a document was written, keystroke by keystroke. That's useful for writers proving they wrote their own work, and for editors checking a disputed piece.

Team, reports and API

Pro includes team management, tagged scans, scan history and shareable reports you can send to writers or clients. Enterprise adds API access for automating checks in your own CMS or workflow.

Which plan should you pick?

  • Free: occasional spot checks of AI detection only.
  • Pay-as-you-go: best for irregular use, such as checking a few freelance articles a month. Credits last two years.
  • Pro: the right choice for anyone publishing weekly or managing writers, and the cheapest way to get plagiarism, fact checking and site scans.
  • Enterprise: agencies and publishers checking more than 200,000 words a month or needing the API.

What Originality.ai does well

  • Everything in one pass. AI, plagiarism, facts and readability in one scan saves switching between tools.
  • Built for publishers. Team management, site scans, shareable reports and AI allowance fit how content businesses actually work.
  • Strong detection. It has performed well in several independent, peer-reviewed accuracy studies and is updated as new models launch.
  • Paraphrase detection. It catches a common trick for disguising AI text.
  • Writing Replay. A fair way for honest writers to prove authorship.

Where it falls short

  • No AI detector is proof. False positives happen, especially on short, formal, formulaic or heavily edited text. Use the score as one signal and never as the only basis for rejecting a writer or accusing a student.
  • Strict by design. Originality.ai aims to catch AI text, and lightly AI-edited human writing (for example, grammar rewrites) can score as AI.
  • Credits add up. Running several checks on long content uses credits quickly; estimate your monthly word count first.
  • Fact checking assists, it doesn't replace you. Verify important claims yourself.
  • Not for casual users. If you only want to check one essay, the free checks may be all you need.

Who should use Originality.ai

  • Content agencies and SEO teams that need to verify what writers deliver.
  • Website owners hiring freelancers or buying content, and anyone buying an established website.
  • Bloggers using AI writing tools like Rytr who want to make sure their final drafts are original, accurate and edited enough. Our pre-publish checklist shows how.
  • Educators, with appropriate care around false positives.

The verdict

Originality.ai is the most complete content-checking tool for people who publish for a living. The AI score should start a conversation rather than end it, but plagiarism and fact checks, team features and site scans make it worth the money for anyone managing content at scale.

Try Originality.ai (opens in a new tab) with the free daily scans, then pick pay-as-you-go or Pro once you know your volume.

Frequently asked questions

Is Originality.ai free?

There's a free option with 3 AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words each. Plagiarism, fact checking and other tools need credits or a paid plan.

How accurate is Originality.ai?

It has performed well in several independent accuracy studies, but no detector is 100% accurate. False positives and false negatives both happen, so use the score as one piece of evidence.

What does the Originality.ai score mean?

It's the model's confidence in its prediction. "Likely AI, 70% confidence" means the model is 70% sure the text is AI-generated, not that 70% of the text is AI.

Can Originality.ai detect ChatGPT and Claude?

Yes. It's trained on output from major models including OpenAI's GPT family, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, and is updated as new models are released.

How much text does one credit cover?

One credit scans 100 words, so a 1,500-word article uses 15 credits per check type.

Does Originality.ai have an API?

Yes, on the Enterprise plan, for automating scans in your own CMS or publishing workflow.
